The Moment I Know My Burnout

In some ways, I have put off sharing my thoughts of my personal poker drought because I am an "A" personality type with an ultra-positive atitude. In other ways, I become so miserable that I tend to procrastinate everything that I know is of general well-being about my poker game.  The swings of the game can sometimes dictate my emotions.  I strive on emotionless-based decision making skills, but fail at them at the same time.  Really causes a whirlwind of over-thinking coupled with a…

Michael Drummond Victorious in $5,000 Six-handed PLO Against Darius Studdard

For Unabomber fans, the WSOP $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Six Handed tournament finishes in anticlimactic fashion––the always exciting-to-watch Phil Laak goes out in sixth, leaving five relatively tight players to duke it out. Surprisingly, action continues apace, with the short stacked Kory Kilpatrick driving most of the creative post flop play.

To Have and Have Not: Grinding the $185 WSOP Deepstack, Dreaming of Monster Stacks, & Railing the Stars

Today offers a relative lull in the action, with only a $1,500 NLHE event filled with lesser known players moving to final table action. Actually, these are often my favorite events, with players vying for glory in its purest sense––for the chance to become part of WSOP lore and earn some serious cash. I was seriously rooting for unknown Darius Studdard, who does not Twitter, to take home the PLO Six-handed bracelet yesterday.

For me it is a…

Will 'imahustla1' Givens Achieves WSOP Redemption With Victory Over Angela Prada-Moed

One thing I have learned these two weeks covering the WSOP––you can never tell which matches will be the most memorable. A $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em tournament that began on the weekend with 1,841 runners, WSOP Event #45 provides unexpected drama in…

Chris Ruby Out of $1,500 PLO Event on a Board With Two Queens of Hearts

Ok, I’ve been avoiding controversy-related commentary for some time. I haven’t commented on the Mike Matusow and Brandon Cantu table antics (and hotly debated floor decisions) because I wasn’t there and if I am going to report on such shenanigans, I want to see them with my own eyes.

It is however incontrovertible that two queens of hearts came out on a hand in the $1,500 PLO tournament, nearly costing Chris Ruby his tournament…

Talking With Sam Trickett and Plugging the Ironman Tournament Concept

On my way cover the final two $10,000 Six Handed NLHE tables at the Rio this afternoon, I happen upon former soccer pro and One Drop second-place finisher Sam Trickett, who is finishing up an interview with the Global Poker Index. He recounts the story of a sick pot in the high stakes Macao games he sometimes plays in––a leveling war in which a pro bet roughly $10 million into a $10 million pot on a paired board, in which a potential straight and flush were also on the board. The…

Despite Fuzzy Math, Alex Bilokur Scoops $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em Event

I’m taking the weekend easy, watching the live stream by the swimming pool at my Las Vegas “homtel” across from the Hard Rock. Honestly, as big as the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em event is in the WSOP firmament, I do not see a real need to be at the Rio for a major WSOP.com streamed table. Standing up near the table on the ESPN stage is uncomfortable, plain and simple, what with the television cameras, officials, snarky photographers, and whatnot. Those bold enough to stand next to…

Action Flop-to-river Sequence in WSOP NLHE Event #19, With Four Remaining

With four players left in the WSOP Event #19: No-Limit Hold'em tournament, and all players guaranteed a six-figure payday, new short stack Ted Gillis started to get active, raising all in repeatedly. Gillis limped in the small blind with 10-9 hearts and called a preflop raise by Fernandez. When the flop came 10-K-4 Gillis went for broke and shoved all in. Holding K-Q, Fernandez called and watched in anguish as Gillis hit his miracle 10 on…

WSOP Event #19 –– The Fall of Divkovic to Gillis After Dinner Break

After the dinner break, WSOP Event #19: No-Limit Hold'em tournament players seemed to be feeling the cumulative effect of getting through a field of 2,000 and were anxious to bring the action to a close. Divkovic raised to 125,000 with pocket sevens from the button and Ted Gillis reraised to 500,000. Arguably, given Gillis’ sustained aggression over the past couple hours,…

‘Queen High’ Kitai Felts ‘Sore Loser’ Ruberto and Ultimately Defeats Vayo For Third WSOP Bracelet

After Helmuth busted just shy of the final table, rail interest in the $3,000 no-limit hold'em six handed tournament dropped off dramatically. The quality of play did not diminish however, with European star Davidi Kitai putting on a final table clinic so convincing that WSOP commentator David Tuchman gave him a 90 percent chance of taking the tournament down. Once the table was down to…
